Ukraine has persisted in targeting Russian oil infrastructure despite calls from former U.S. President Donald Trump to cease these actions, which he claims are exacerbating global fuel prices and tightening diesel supplies. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed a strike on an oil facility in Russia’s Samara region, alongside attacks on a Russian vessel in the Black Sea and a drone-related facility in the Oryol region.
Trump has linked Ukraine’s strikes on Russian refineries to disruptions in global diesel supplies. However, energy analysts highlight the broader impact of the Iran war on global oil markets as a significant factor in the rising fuel prices. The Ukrainian campaign against Russian refineries has reportedly hit a substantial portion of Russia’s refining capacity, leading to fuel shortages and rationing in certain Russian areas. In response, Russia has extended restrictions on its diesel exports, further affecting international fuel supplies.
Despite supporting an energy ceasefire, Zelenskyy has faced continued aggression from Moscow, with Russian President Vladimir Putin dismissing proposals that would tie a halt to Russian attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure with an end to Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil facilities. Meanwhile, Russia persists in launching missile and drone attacks across Ukraine, targeting energy infrastructure and other critical facilities, raising concerns about potential electricity and heating supply issues as winter approaches.
