Mateusz Morawiecki, the former Prime Minister of Poland, has announced his intention to step down from his role as president of the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) Party. However, he has left the door open for the possibility of continuing in the position should party members express a desire for him to remain. This development comes against the backdrop of internal discord within Poland’s Law and Justice (PiS) party, particularly concerning membership declarations and his association, Rozwój Plus.
Morawiecki explained that traditionally, the presidency of the ECR is held by the second-largest party within the alliance. He noted that his political faction would no longer occupy that rank, which has influenced his decision to consider resigning. Despite the internal disagreements, Morawiecki emphasized that his political camp still boasts the support of numerous lawmakers and several Members of the European Parliament.
His announcement has added another layer to the ongoing tensions within the PiS party, where differences have been emerging. Nonetheless, Morawiecki’s political group remains a significant force, maintaining a considerable presence both domestically and in the European Parliament.
Morawiecki’s leadership of the ECR began in early 2025, when he was elected with the endorsement of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. His tenure has been marked by efforts to consolidate the alliance’s influence across Europe, though his potential departure could signal shifts in the party’s dynamics and future direction.
