In a significant effort to bolster regional cooperation in Eastern Europe, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky hosted the inaugural Carpathian 8 Summit in Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast, western Ukraine. The three-day summit, which concluded on September 20, aimed at enhancing collaboration among eight countries in key areas such as security, energy, and economic development.
The summit brought together leaders and officials from Ukraine, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Czechia, Hungary, Slovakia, and Austria. Notably, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, Romanian President Nicusor Dan, and Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic were present to engage in discussions. Slovakia was represented by a senior official from its foreign ministry.
With an eye on economic transformation, the summit gathered approximately 500 business representatives, highlighting the forum’s focus on economic initiatives. President Zelensky announced that investment agreements and projects exceeding €1 billion were in the pipeline, with nearly 100 projects being showcased by the participating countries.
Key discussions during the summit centered around strengthening transport and energy infrastructure, which are crucial for improving regional mobility. The leaders emphasized expanding trade and investment links across the Carpathian region, reinforcing the importance of cross-border economic cooperation.
Poland reaffirmed its support for Ukraine, underlining the necessity of regional cooperation in the face of ongoing challenges. The summit also aimed to strengthen coordination on Ukraine’s path to European integration, providing a platform for collaboration with countries holding diverse views on military assistance to Kyiv.
