EU Stands Firm Against US Proposal for Resuming Russian Gas Via Ukraine

Must Read

In a significant move, the European Union has firmly opposed a proposal to resume Russian natural gas imports via Ukraine, aligning with its commitment to eliminate dependency on Russian fossil fuels by 2027. This stance reflects the EU’s determination to maintain pressure on Russia amid ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

The proposal, reportedly backed by certain US representatives, suggested reviving Russian gas transit through Ukraine with assistance from an American intermediary. The arrangement aimed to provide transit revenue for Ukraine while allowing Russia to resume gas exports to Europe. However, EU officials have rejected the idea, citing the unacceptable nature of renewed energy cooperation given Russia’s continued aggression in Ukraine.

The US-backed initiative, discussed by representatives Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, included potential safeguards such as placing Russian gas revenues in an escrow account managed by a third country. This measure was designed to prevent the direct use of funds for Moscow’s military efforts. Nevertheless, the EU’s legal framework, which plans to phase out Russian gas contracts by 2027, presents a significant obstacle to the proposal’s realization.

Ukraine’s decision to halt Russian gas transit on January 1, 2025, following the expiration of its existing agreement, underscores Kyiv’s stance against renewing the arrangement. The Ukrainian government highlighted concerns over Russian energy revenues fueling the ongoing conflict.

Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten has also expressed opposition to the re-establishment of Russian gas purchases, advocating instead for heightened sanctions and sustained economic pressure on Russia. This sentiment resonates with the EU’s broader strategy to reduce energy reliance on Russia while supporting Ukraine.

Meanwhile, discussions between US and Russian officials have reportedly explored broader energy cooperation, including the potential return of American oil companies to Russia and the revival of specific export routes. However, these proposals face considerable political, regulatory, and infrastructural challenges, particularly within the European context.

The EU’s resistance to the US-backed gas proposal highlights a divergence in approaches between Washington’s efforts to explore economic arrangements with Moscow and Europe’s steadfast strategy to reduce Russian energy dependence amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
