Amidst ongoing protests in Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is under mounting pressure to bring back former Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, who was recently dismissed. Zelenskyy had previously shaken up the country’s military leadership by appointing Mykhailo Drapatyi as the new Commander-in-Chief, replacing Oleksandr Syrskyi. However, this change has not quelled public unrest, as demonstrated by the continued demonstrations. Fedorov, who turned down the role of deputy prime minister, is firm in his stance that he should return as defence minister to advance his plans for modernizing and reforming Ukraine’s military.
The interim leadership of the defence ministry is currently under the command of special forces leader Yevhenii Khmara, creating an uncertain path for Fedorov’s potential reinstatement without further restructuring. Protest leaders have announced additional rallies in Kyiv, signaling their intent to keep up the pressure until Fedorov is back in his ministerial role. This political impasse has sparked concerns that the tension could extend into a second week, highlighting the depth of public sentiment surrounding the issue.
In parallel with these domestic challenges, Ukraine has ramped up its military operations against Russia, launching drone strikes targeting military and economic sites within Russian borders. The newly appointed Commander-in-Chief Drapatyi is tasked with broadening offensive efforts, enhancing military strength, integrating new technologies, and boosting activities behind enemy lines. Drapatyi’s leadership has garnered support from some of Ukraine’s political and military leaders, who regard him as a seasoned and competent figure. Nonetheless, military experts caution that he will face significant hurdles, particularly with the potential for increased Russian troop deployments in the near future.
The reshuffling of military leadership follows internal disagreements on the strategic direction of Ukraine’s defense policy. Fedorov has been a proponent of swift technological upgrades, whereas the previous military leadership leaned towards a more conventional strategy. Meanwhile, Russia has downplayed the significance of Ukraine’s leadership changes, asserting that these developments are unlikely to alter the dynamics on the battlefield.
