During a visit from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to Calgary, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney committed to bolstering Ukraine’s air defense and drone capabilities. This pledge includes a substantial C$350 million (US$253 million) contribution. The funds are part of a US-led initiative aimed at equipping Ukraine with essential military equipment, training, and other forms of defense support as the country contends with heightened Russian missile and drone assaults.
In addition to military support, Canada is set to provide C$450 million in loan guarantees to reinforce Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. This financial backing is intended to facilitate the restoration of damaged facilities, enhance energy storage, and ensure the steady supply of electricity to critical services, such as hospitals. The comprehensive support underscores Canada’s commitment to aiding Ukraine in multiple critical areas.
Carney and Zelenskyy also sealed an agreement with aspirations of forming a “hundred-year partnership” that would encompass defense, critical minerals, energy, and other cooperative sectors. This long-term collaboration highlights the strategic relationship the two nations aim to cultivate across various fields essential to both countries’ interests.
Moreover, Canada made an announcement that 30% of its upcoming domestic drone production would be allocated to Ukraine. Zelenskyy clarified that these drones would be instrumental on the battlefield, assisting Ukrainian forces and safeguarding civilian populations amid ongoing conflicts.
Looking ahead, Zelenskyy is anticipated to meet with US President Donald Trump in New York later this month, possibly in conjunction with the United Nations General Assembly. This meeting is part of ongoing efforts to rekindle negotiations focused on bringing an end to the war, signaling a continued push for diplomatic resolutions.
